What to Expect

At the first visit:

It will begin with a conversation about the clients current physical condition, medical history and reason for visit and what you expect out of the session. Assessment of a person's condition also includes traditional parameters of pulse, observation, and especially palpation of the abdomen.

A shiatsu session is traditionally done on a special futon mat on the floor with the recipient wearing loose cotton clothing. No needles, oils or lotions are used. Gentle yet firm pressure is applied along the meridians of the arms, legs, back, neck and head to open the pathways to qi flow. Specific acupressure points are chosen and held in combinations to further balance the qi. Often, the rhythm of shiatsu technique and the acupressure to the point combinations form a rhythmic movement that lulls the recipient into a deep state of relaxation. Recipients should refrain from vigorous exercise or eating a large meal for one hour before the session, however, one should not receive a session when hungry or on an empty stomach.
